cows have 4 legs, hens have 2
all have 1 head (unless you have beheaded some already )

so:

4x + 2y = 2*(x + y) +14

4x + 2y = 2x + 2y + 14

4x = 2x + 14

2x = 14
x = 7
7 cows.
